1.Iran introduces new currency “Toman” to tackle Inflation
Iran’s
parliament has passed a bill allowing the government to slash four zeroes from
the trial,after a sharp fall in the value of the currency because of crippling
U.S. sanctions.
Under
the bill,Irans’s national currency will be changed from the rial to Toman,which
is equal to 10,000 rials.
The
currency ‘rial’ has been devalued 3,500 times since 1971.The move will help in
improving the financial status of the country along with easy transactions and
calculations.
2.Impact of energy
efficiency measures for the year 2018-19 report
released
Ministry of Power
and New &
Renewable Energy released
report “Impact of energy efficiency measures for the year 2018-19”
This
report was prepared by an expert agency Pwc Ltd , to evaluate the performance
and impact of all the key energy efficiency programmes in india.
The
total energy savings in 2018-19 is 2.69% of the total primary energy supply
during 2018-19.Reports suggest that various energy efficiency schemes have led
to electricity savings.
3.SC says cooperative banks on a par with other lenders
under Sarfaesi Act
Supreme Court has held that cooperative banks involved in banking service within ‘banking
company’ and Parliament has legislative competence to provide for procedure for recovery of loan under the SARFAESI Act.The judgment came due to conflicting decisions by
high courts on this issue. The judgement was delivered by 5-judge bench headed by Justice
Arun Mishra. Recognizing cooperative banks to
have SARFAESI rights will help in handling defaults
4.Styrene gas leaked from LG
Polymers Plant in Vishakhapatnam
A gas leak, reminiscent of the 1984 Bhopal tragedy, has affected around 5000 of residents in 5 villages in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
The source of the leak was a styrene plant owned by South Korean electronics giant LG, located at RRV Puram near Gopalapatnam m
Styrene is a flammable liquid that is used in the manufacturing of polystyrene plastics, fiberglass, rubber, and latex.
It can affect respiratory system, central nervous system along with other diseases.
5.MoHFW launches ‘AYUSH Sanjivani’ App
Harsh Vardhan, MoHFW launched the ‘AYUSH Sanjivani’ App and 2 AYUSH based COVID19 studies.
The app will help to generate data on acceptance and usage of AYUSH advocacies, measures and its impact in COVID 19 prevention.
It is developed by Ministry
of AYUSH and MEITY with target of 50 lakh people.
In addition to the App, collaborative clinical
research study on Ayurveda interventions as
prophylaxis and as an add-on
to standard care
to COVID 19 were also launched.
6. Union HRD Minister
announces modifications in PMRF Scheme
to boost research
Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' announced various amendments in Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship Scheme (PMRF) to boost research in the country.
Under this, the requirement of GATE Score is reduced to 650 from 750 apart from minimum CGPA of 8 or equivalent.
A dedicated "Research and Innovation
Division" has been created.
It will
improve the quality of research in various higher educational institutions in the country
7.NCSTC-GUJCOST Webinar Series to be organized
National
Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC) and Gujarat Council of Science &
Technology (GUJCOST) will be organizing a Webinar Series
on ‘Science Communication in the
Time of COVID-19’.
The webinar will be held from 10 to 16 May 2020 everyday between 10-11 a.m and would be accessible online through internet.
The webinar would address
ways of tackling the current pandemic by applying various methods and means.
It will also spread awareness.
8.JNCASR fabricates energy-efficient photodetector for security
application
Scientists from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) have fabricated an economical and energy-efficient wafer-scale photodetector (thin slice-based) using gold-silicon interface for security applications.
It could
help detect weak scattered light as an indication of unwanted activity.
The detector is quick, highly economical and enabled large-area fabrication without compromising the detector response.
9.World Red
Cross Day being observed today
World Red Cross Day or Red Crescent
Day is observed on 8th May by the
Red Cross society across
all the countries.
World Red Cross Society provides for food shortages, natural disasters, wars as well as disease of an epidemic.
This date marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant (Nobel Peace Prize recipient), who is the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
10.Madhya
Pradesh develops Unique vehicle ‘Sanjeevani’
A unique vehicle ‘Sanjeevani’ has been developed at the local level
in Madhya Pradesh.
The vehicle will help health workers to investigate any suspected patients without coming into the contact of him.
This unique vehicle is designed at the initiative of Rajnagar administration of Chhatarpur district.
It does not even require PPE kit.
11.Delhi
Govt launches e-token system for liquor sale
Delhi Government launched e-token
system for liquor
sale in the national
capital to ensure social
distancing and to stop overcrowding.
The decision was taken to encourage people to avoid long queues by applying for an e-token with time slot at any nearby shop to buy liquor.
Name and phone number will be required while applying and the e-token will be sent at the registered mobile number.
12.Defence
Minister inaugurates Link Road to Kailash Mansarovar
Defence
Minister Rajnath Singh today inaugurated the Link Road
to Kailash Mansarovar via video
conferencing.
The link road
connects Dharchula to Lipulekh, China Border which is known
as Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra Route.
The road has been constructed by Border Roads Organization (BRO).
The Minister also flagged off a convoy of vehicles from Pithoragarh to Gunji
